I use XMarks (early Foxmarks) since its early beginning to synchronize my bookmarks as a backup procedure and when I switched computers. Many users are (where) using it for synchronizing their bookmarks between multiple computers and browsers.
Today they told us they would pulled the plug on the service as they didn’t have the money to continue. They didn’t have the money because mainly they expect as many other startups that a business model will emerge (magically) from their activities.
I always didn’t understand why they were not charging for their service. At some point I even looked if a premium service was existing to encourage them. The service alone worth at least $5 a month. On 2 millions active users, many would probably have not paid for it, but I’m sure many would have been converted. Even 1% of those users would have mean a revenue of 1.2 millions a year. For sure starting from the ground up, would not have mean that type of revenue right away, but if you grow slowly with few employees, few servers and a service that solve a problem that some would consider paying for, then you may have found a way to do what you want and live from it.
Now they are shutting down in 90 days and this is very sad.
