if you work hard enough, you can actually do what you like as long as you have empathy and a connection with people. The more open you are to people, the more it will show in what you do and the more others will identify with your work. I try to be really spontaneous and genuine about what I do. I believe that if it makes sense to me and makes me laugh, it will make someone else laugh.

If you can live without it, then you don’t need it; get rid of it.”

-
Malika Favre - The Great Discontent

The essence of simplicity. I’m currently designing an iPad app, and I’m stroke at how designing for a smaller platform where the content really is the King, how that principle is so crucial, where less is more.

The Great Discontent: Malika Favre

The Great Discontent: Malika Favre:

If you could go back and do one thing differently what would it be? Or would you?

I don’t think I would. It’s a bit cheesy, but I really think things happen for a reason. The choices you make shape you. I’ve had some rough times, but I think it has taught me a lot. I’m super lucky to do what I do and be surrounded by friends and family. I have a job I love and I don’t have to use an alarm clock in the morning—how good is that?

Wow! I could you not be amazed by that? This is why I cannot stop reading TGD. It keeps blowing my mind of inspiring quotes.

"I didn’t want to go freelance and say yes to jobs I didn’t want to do just because I needed the..."

“I didn’t want to go freelance and say yes to jobs I didn’t want to do just because I needed the money. It had to be on my terms because I wanted to do more of what I loved and not struggle.”

-
Malika Favre - The Great Discontent

The only way to go freelance if you ask me: On your own terms, whatever they are, otherwise your a prisoner of the things you don’t want.

The Great Discontent: Tad Carpenter

The Great Discontent: Tad Carpenter:

I worked for someone else. I think a lot of students want to do their own thing right out of school and now, as a teacher, I can’t recommend highly enough that they go work for someone else for at least five years. That’s a drop in the bucket when it comes to your career. The fact that someone will pay you to learn is priceless. We get out of school and we still don’t know that much, but you learn so rapidly your first year of being employed.

I did that. I worked at a smaller, boutique branding firm for five or six years. I made a conscious effort to be there longer because I wanted to be 100% ready when I went out on my own. There was a transition period where I was working full-time during the day and doing freelance work all night. I actually did that for a few years until I was plenty comfortable and busy on my own. I’ve officially been on my own for three and a half years now.

I’m a firm believer in taking risks as an artist. If you just sit back and play it safe all the time, your work’s going to be pretty vanilla and your life might be as well. I knew when it was time to break out on my own and I grabbed the reigns and did it.

Great advice from Tad: “The fact that someone will pay you to learn is priceless.” I could not imagine myself being a freelancer today if I haven’t done the army, as I like to call it, in diverse agencies. You learn so much, it gives you the confidence that you can make it on your own afterward.

"You don’t need permission to be creative."

“You don’t need permission to be creative.”

- Tad Carpenter - The Great Discontent

The Great Discontent: Jeff Rogers

The Great Discontent: Jeff Rogers:

Words of wisdom from a man I so do much recognized in me as for his non linear path to how he thinks and feels. That was a great read.

People also often apply variants of this theory when guessing how other huge players such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon will fare when pitting similar products against Apple’s. For instance, Microsoft has effectively infinite money and overwhelming dominance in many software markets. Google has effectively infinite web traffic. Amazon is ruthlessly efficient to sell and ship products at lower prices than nearly anyone.

But all of the money, web traffic, and cheap cardboard boxes in the world can’t buy two huge factors that contribute to Apple’s modern success: time and taste.

“For a year!” He interjects. “And I’m gonna keep talking about it!”

“To be at 15 million users on one platform is not something any other social mobile company can say. There are a lot of others that are in that size range but are multi-platform. We saw an opportunity to be really good at one thing, and it turns out that helped us. It wasn’t because we felt like Android wasn’t an opportunity we wanted to go after. It wasn’t about the quality of the phone—there are plenty of awesome Android phones; we have a bunch in the office that have beautiful displays and beautiful cameras. It’s more that we were three people trying to keep the site up. We’re now eight people, with ten people worldwide.”
