Is it possible to stream any video formats directly to the new Apple TV?

In short the answer is NO ;(

Since the Apple TV has been announced yesterday, I did wonder if you would be able to stream any video format to it in some way. I don’t see the point of owning the Apple TV if I cannot stream any video formats to it, or at least convert on the fly the video in a format compatible to the Apple TV and stream the video feed to it.

Two companies have Server and iPad/iPhone/iTouch App that convert and stream on the fly any video formats to your device from your computer. It’s Air Video (before called Wi-Fi Video) and StreamToMe.

It means that if you have a TV OUT cable for your iPad or iPhone than you can turn it into a media center by connecting it to your TV. But what if I just don’t want to bother with that and simply send the video feed directly to the Apple TV. I had to write to InMethod, the maker of the amazing Air Video to know if it would be possible.

Ok I know you must have been asked this question a couple of times since the new release of the Apple TV yesterday, but I need to know.

Since we can turn our iPad and iPhone into a media center by connecting it to our TV and stream any video to it with your Air Video server/app, I wonder if you see any way to stream any video format directly to the Apple TV with the new AirPlay?

I guess we would be able to use our iPad or iPhone as middleware with the 4.1 firmware update, pushing the video currently playing on the iPhone/iPad to the Apple TV with the AirPlay functionality, but I was wondering if your already tough about how to stream directly to the new Apple TV?

So we have to stay tune… I guess the new Apple TV would be almost impossible to hack, without opening it since there is no USB port on it.

Wired Magazine’s iPad Edition

First a quote from Dustin Curtis who truly had resumed it pretty well:

The Wired iPad app is the greatest leap for content journalism since the web. If the iPad isn’t magic by itself, this app makes it so.

Before today, I didn’t see really the point of having an iPad. The world of the edition has truly took another step with this incredible device and how the guys at Wired found a way to exploit it at its best.

Note: The new Wired iPad edition is 527MB. Just that fact alone is awesome.

Side note: after watching the video, I have the feeling that they are stuck in Mad Men era at the Wired Office.

Interesting.

And yes this is funny, the two things people are saying seeing an iPad for the first time and then holding it are: “Wow! This is is smaller than anticipated” (for the ones that have been seeing the ads on TV or saw a photo of it on the Web) and “Wow! this is heavy!”.

The Death of Files - Welcome The iPhone and iPad Era

The concept of a “file” as a container to hold a piece of content is dying. The contents inside the files are becoming the central actors for creating user interactions. Computers are becoming more human, and part of the evolutionary process requires them to more closely complement the human brain’s built-in systems for interacting with the world.

The iPhone OS completely removes the concept of a “file.” It promotes apps to being the primary level of user interaction, and it stores related things inside databases that are content-specific. When you pick up your iPhone and want to view photos, you open the Photos app, which connects to the photos database and shows you all of your photos. When you want to listen to music, you open the iPod app, which connects to the music database. Everything on the iPhone is task-centric, not file-centric. The “file” part of completing tasks is completely insulated from the user.

Because most computer operating systems don’t organize things this way, accomplishing simple tasks can be extremely confusing for casual computer users; doing anything requires the user to know several things before he can even start his task

And this is why Apple have already sold 1 million iPads. Everyone, children as grandmothers, are now able to accomplish the thing they want without the need to know how to operate a computer or care about where the related data are stored or located.

I wanted to jot down some of our thoughts on Adobe’s Flash products so that customers and critics may better understand why we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads. Adobe has characterized our decision as being primarily business driven – they say we want to protect our App Store – but in reality it is based on technology issues. Concept: iPad Split Keyboard by Scott Robbin

Aesthetics aside…

It seems like the iPad’s keyboard, in landscape mode, leaves you no choice but to hold the device in one hand and hunt-n-peck with the other. What if the keyboard was split into two, and placed in the lower-right and left corners? Then, you could hold it with both hands, and type a la the iPhone.

It’d be a sacrifice to the key size, for sure, but it might be more comfortable and functional.

I totally agree! This is a great concept. I’m sure Apple will never implement something like this, but the concept is more than interesting.
